Growstones are a new hydroponic media created by pulverizing and baking recycled glass with natural additives. Growstone GS-1 is designed to be used in all hydroponic systems and can replace many other mediums like Rockwool, expanded clay, and perlite. Growstones create an effective balance between air and water content, providing plants with all the water they need to grow but also quickly draining and aerating roots when water is withheld. Growstone GS-1 sets an industry standard for powerful and sustainable growing media, pick up a bag today and grow the difference yourself.
Growstones start their lives not as rocks, but as recycled glass bottles. The glass bottles are collected and then pulverized into an ultra-fine glass powder, about as fine as baking flour. Natural foaming agents and additives are mixed in at specific ratios, and the whole mixture is then fed to a massive kiln to bake. Once finished baking, the Growstones are cooled and crushed into pieces for packaging.Best classes at berkeley reddit
They replace mined materials like pumice, perlite, clay pellets, and stonewool, reducing environmental degradation. At the same time, since the product consists overwhelmingly of recycled glass bottles, a large amount of glass waste is given a new life, keeping it from the landfill.Hifz revision

Great product, does exactly what it says it does. Thin layer on top of soil in my potted houseplants completely eliminates fungus gnats within a few days. Super easy to use. Really helps prevent outbreaks by creating a barrier. Will definitely be keeping a bag or two around. I had an extreme issue this time around with fungus gnats in my 7 gallon SIP. I believe the issue stemmed from using a Fox Farm "organic" soil as my wicking layer.
I mean these guys were in full effect! The only issue is that by adding this to the top of my SIPs is that we couldnt do any more top dressing so I feel this has effected the plants production in the fruiting stage. I do recommend this product for sure. Support buildasoil.

Detroit Nutrient Company Worm Castings. The world of hydroponics can be a bit intimidating to someone new to the methods. Even the subject of growing medium can seem convoluted. Should I use floral foam? Oasis cubes? Coconut chips or fiber? Should I just go jump in a river and fish for rocks?
Before you end up shivering from a frigid dip in the nearest river, look to this guide for information on a particular growing medium that is quite popular amongst hydroponics gardeners.
Hydroton, otherwise known as lightweight expanded clay aggregate Leca for shorthas lovers and a few haters as well, like any medium available. Listen to this post on the Epic Gardening Podcast. Subscribe to the Epic Gardening Podcast on iTunes. When searching for information on this subject, you will find there are several names it goes by: expanded clay pebbles, leca clay, and clay balls are all examples. It is made by heating clay to over 2, degrees Fahrenheit using a rotary kiln, which gives it that signature pebbly form.
This process fills the clay with little air bubbles, making it perfect for holding oxygen as well as moisture around plant roots. It can be mixed with soil or used alone. Leca clay is a popular medium because it has a number of upsides and only a few downsides. How those downsides affect you depends on your time, patience, and resources. A truly impatient gardener is probably in the wrong business anyway and should take up something more instantly gratifying.
Like skydiving. The ebb-and-flow system and the drip system are the usual recommended methods for using these clay pebbles. Rinse the pebbles thoroughly before using. As mentioned before, skipping or skimping on this step may lead to more expensive problems down the road.
Take the time to do it thoroughly from the very get-go.As we have discussed in other pages, aquaponics combines aquaculture raising aquatic animals such as fish, snails, crayfish, and prawns and hydroponics growing plants without soil into one integrated system. Ammonia in fish waste is broken down by bacteria and converted into nitrites — and then nitrates — to be used as fertilizer for the plants.
It is clear that the main components of a recirculating aquaponics system are the fish tank, fish, grow beds, plants, and pump. But did you realize that the aquaponics grow media you choose is also an important consideration? After that, we will list the top 5 mediums for aquaponics.
Grow media serves as a support structure for the plants in an aquaponics system. Not only does the media keep plants in a stationary and upright position, but it also provides as a surface area for bacteria to thrive inside your grow beds, and a acts as a mechanical trap for the solid waste as it is expelled out of the fish tank and into the grow beds.
Furthermore, aquaponics grow media serves as an exchange for oxygen and moisture, and gives worms a comfortable habitat to live in. Inert — Aquaponics grow media should be pH-neutral. Size — If the media is too small, its bound to cause compaction and clogging. Large grow media is apt to cause air gaps, which can adversely affect the growth of the plants. Light to medium-weight media is ideal. Easy on the Hands — Sharp grow media can not only damage plant roots, but it can also cut your hands as you tend to your grow beds.
Choose an aquaponics grow medium which is relatively smooth yet still highly porous. Avoid grow mediums that will introduce anything harmful to the system. If you are unsure whether limestone is present, place your gravel in a cup of clear vinegar. If it starts to fizzle, chances are high that the gravel contains some problematic limestone.
Another good test involves placing the rock in a cup of distilled water and letting it sit. After a few days of sitting, test the pH. If your gravel passes both of these tests, then its probably ok to use in your aquaponics grow beds. Rinse before Using — Be sure to thoroughly rinse any dust and debris from your aquaponics grow media before using it in your system. The optimal range for most aquaponic systems is a pH of 6. Monitor your pH closely and adjust accordingly.
Coco Coir — As is the case with most organic grow media, coco coir tends to break down in aquaponics systems. It also holds too much moisture, discolors the water, and may even cause your pH to go out of whack. Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate LECA are balls of clay which have been processed at a super-high temperature to form a highly effective grow medium. It is one of the most popular media used in both hydroponics and aquaponics — and for good reason.
Clay pebbles are lightweight yet heavy enough to provide good support to a plant. They are also pH-neutral, non-degradable, and release almost no additional nutrients into the water.
A possible downside is the initial expense of purchasing bags of LECA. Because clay pebbles have very few drawbacks and fit every criterion for a great aquaponics grow media, they are our top pick. Like LECA, expanded shale is another great aquaponics grow medium.
The silicon-based shale is mined, crushed, and then kiln-fired at high temperatures. The result is a porous, pH-neutral, and clean aggregate that is ready to use in an aquaponics system. Although slightly heavier than LECA, expanded shale has a lightweight profile which works well in aquaponics grow beds.
Each stone possesses a large surface area for producing the bacteria necessary to convert ammonia into nitrates. Additionally, shale is reusable and typically manufactured in the USA. For all of the positive characteristics of expanded shale, we rate it as 2 on our list of best aquaponics grow media. Growstones are a kiln-fired aggregate made from mixing recycled glass with calcium carbonate. Growstones provide beneficial moisture and aeration to the root zone and their large surface creates an ideal area for beneficial bacteria to colonize.Using a mulch in the vegetable garden has become a very popular and almost necessary item.
Mulches perform many duties in the garden by suppressing weeds, controlling water runoff, helping to control some garden pests, and also by creating a more attractive garden space. Personally, I never used any type of mulch in my vegetable garden until this year, and now I swear by it.
Adding mulch to my vegetable garden has decreased weeds to almost none. I may have to pull a tiny weed or two every couple weeks, compared to when I did not use mulch, I needed to pull weeds almost every day. That alone has sold me on the importance of using mulch.
Many gardeners that have never used mulch in their vegetable gardens before may wonder which type of mulch is best. It really depends on what is readily available in your area, and what you are growing in your garden. Organic mulches are made from plant materials such as barkleaves or needles, grass clippings, or compost. A 2-inch layer of sawdust provides good weed control. Fresh sawdust contains a great deal of carbon and very little nitrogen, and its breakdown requires that microorganisms take nitrogen from the soil.
There is often a problem with crusting of fresh sawdust, which can make it difficult for rainfall to soak through. Sawdust is best used for vegetable garden paths and around permanent plantings. Readily available from sawmills, it tends to be inexpensive.
A 6- to 8-inch layer of hay or straw provides good annual weed control. These materials decompose quickly and must be replenished to keep down weeds. They stay in place and will improve the soil as they decay. Avoid hay that is full of weed seed and brambles. Fresh legume hay, such as alfalfa, supplies nitrogen as it quickly breaks down. Hay and straw are readily available in rural areas, but city dwellers may not be able to obtain hay easily. Straw, on the other hand, may be purchased at most garden centers, often commanding a high price.
Both are recommended for vegetable and fruit plantings.
Baled pine needles are also found in garden centers for use as a mulch. Pine needles and pine bark should be watched closely in vegetable garden as they can raise the acidic levels of the soil. A 2-inch layer of grass clippings provides good weed control.
Build up the layer gradually, using dry grass. A thick layer of green grass will give off excessive heat and foul odors rather than decompose as other organic material. However, in limited quantity, clippings will decompose rapidly and provide an extra dose of nitrogen to growing plants, as well as making fine humus. No green thumb? No problem!
