How satisfied are you with this reply?Missing, broken, and just plain lame Chinese features. There are two choices for Hanyu Pinyin input of Traditional characters in Windows Your choice should be based not only on your preference for or annoyance with one or the other, but also with attention to what encoding standard is being used by the people you communicate or exchange documents with most. The wrong choice will make it more likely you'll experience technical problems later, like e-mails turning into unreadable garbage.

Let's call it "MSZY" now. It offers modern Traditional characters including the Hong Kong set, and supports the Taiwan Big5 or International Unicode encoding standards.

It offers the ability to enter Pinyin with or without tone numbers and phrase association, and includes tools like the IME Pad for lookup by radical and stroke count. Originally developed for Traditional characters only, it also offers a Simplified character option. This IME is the standard Pinyin input method in the mainland China and Singapore language options described on the previous page.

It offers a Sogou-style typing experience that automatically inserts apostrophes between each sound. It offers very good phrase association but few other ways to narrow down your candidate list, and in the initial Windows 10 release is missing the IME Pad and other tools last seen in Windows 7. Assuming your language options are already set up to this point - as described on the previous page - go to the taskbar, open your language menu, and click "Language preferences" at the bottom.

If you are using the old-style desktop language bar, right-clicking on the language button there will take you to the old-style control panel, where you can make these same changes.

You can jump to those instructions via this link so you don't have to scroll down. Click "Options".

On the next panel that appears, scroll down if necessary and find "Microsoft Bopomofo", select it to reveal those buttons, and click "Options" there too:. In the Settings panel for Microsoft Bopomofo, find the "Keyboard Layout" section, and click on the menu below "Choose your preferred keyboard layout":.

That is, unless you plan to use the Touch Keyboard for Zhuyin Fuhao input. Note this is not the on-screen keyboard available under the Ease of Access settings. Many people accidentally find themselves in that keyboard first. If you do not see that button, right-click on the taskbar or on a touch screen, long-press and releaseand in the menu that pops up, select "Show touch keyboard button":. I'm going out of my way to mention this here because when you are in Zhuyin Fuhao input mode, the Touch Keyboard will have the Zhuyin symbols only, with no Roman letters on the keys, unless the full virtual keyboard is enabled.

To enable the full keyboard, press the language key at the lower right, circled here:. Select the option circled here for the full virtual keyboard with Latin and Zhuyin keys. You may find this or another button greyed out, because Windows 10 tries to give you only options the developers think are best for your PC.Chinese input methods are methods that allow a computer user to input Chinese characters.

Most, if not all, Chinese input methods fall into one of two categories: phonetic readings or root shapes. Methods under the phonetic category usually are easier to learn but are less efficient, thus resulting in slower typing speeds because they typically require users to choose from a list of phonetically similar characters for input; whereas methods under the root shape category allow very precise and speedy input but have a difficult learning curve because they often require a thorough understanding of a character's strokes and composition.

Other methods allow users to write characters directly onto touchscreenssuch as those found on mobile phones and tablet computers.

Chinese input methods predate the computer. It assigned thirty base shapes or strokes to different keys and adopted a new way of categorizing Chinese characters. But the typewriter was not produced commercially and Lin soon found himself deeply in debt. Before the s, Chinese publishers hired teams of workers and selected a few thousand type pieces from an enormous Chinese character set.

Chinese government agencies entered characters using a long, complicated list of Chinese telegraph codeswhich assigned different numbers to each character. During the early computer era, Chinese characters were categorized by their radicals or Pinyin romanization, but results were less than satisfactory.

Chu Bong-Foo invented a common input method in with his Cangjie input methodwhich assigns different "roots" to each key on a standard computer keyboard. Despite its steeper learning curve, this method remains popular in Chinese communities that use traditional Chinese characterssuch as Hong Kong and Taiwan ; the method allows very precise input, thus allowing users to type more efficiently and quickly, provided they are familiar with the fairly complicated rules of the method.

It was the first method that allowed users to enter more than a hundred Chinese characters per minute. All methods have their strengths and weaknesses. The pinyin method can be learned rapidly but its maximum input rate is limited.

The Wubi takes longer to learn, but expert typists can enter text much more rapidly with it than with phonetic methods. In mainland China, the wubi shape-based and pinyin methods such as Sogou Pinyin and Google Pinyin are the most popular; in TaiwanBoshiamyCangjieand zhuyin predominate; and in Hong Kong and Macauthe Cangjie is most often taught in schools.

Other methods include handwriting recognitionOCR and voice recognition. The computer itself must first be "trained" before the first or second of these methods are used; that is, the new user enters the system in a special "learning mode" so that the system can learn to identify their handwriting or speech patterns.

Chinese Input Methods

The latter two methods are used less frequently than keyboard-based input methods and suffer from relatively high error rates, especially when used without proper "training", though higher error rates are an acceptable trade-off to many users.Hello and welcome to the ultimate, definitive master guide for setting up the Chinese language input on your computer or mobile device.
